Timeline
So far, only a few details have emerged regarding the timeline of the Aether Dancer setting. This is part of the project introduction on the IndieGoGo fundraiser page:
500 years before the present day, Earth was rained upon by destructive meteorites. The meteor shower was like none that had ever been recorded. Some meteorites were large enough to wipe out entire cities. Humanity survived. This is the story of the Aether Dancer, a transport airship, and her crew in this brave new world.
The timeline below is pieced together from the teaser video and discussions in various Aether Dancer venues. It is not necessarily canon, but it's what we have to go on for now.
2020 A.D. -- Rocks fall, not quite everybody dies! A massive meteor shower rains down on the Earth. The meteor shower is like none that has ever been recorded. Some meteorites are large enough to wipe out entire cities; Washington, D.C. is peppered by many smaller rocks, obliterating almost everything above ground. This destroys civilization and causes a long dark age.
2024 A.D. -- After about four years of complete anarchy caused by the obliteration of former governments, people crawl out of hiding and begin attempts to rebuild.
The meteor shower brought new diseases unleashed on humanity. Horrible fevers raged among the weak and the frail.
Over several decades, steam power and Tesla coils replaced long-forgotten technology. People turned to the classic literature of the past and redeveloped a civilization.
The atmosphere was dramatically changed due to meteor showers, leading to high levels of pollution and hazardous conditions in the upper atmosphere. This led to a greater concentration of helium, allowing airships to soar.
New minerals led to technological advancements beyond our wildest dreams.
The Central Empire formed with a return to the feudal system. The once-empty titles of Baron or Lord regained meaning, and along with them, the practice of serfdom.
Not everyone was willing to lend allegiance to the Emperor. To the south, brilliant inventors created the state known as Oskinus. These tinkerers built clockwork armies and technology beyond imagination.
To the east, the state of Lachesis was formed. Their surgeons and scientists search for ways to cure the new diseases. These hospitals and universities provided hope for the continuation of life.
To the west lies Maat, a country of mystery and darkness. Little is known of this state, but they produce proud warriors and are deeply religious.
